The British Thyroid Foundation is a charity dedicated to supporting people with thyroid disorders and helping their families and people around them to understand the condition. Since setting up in 1991 we have worked with medical professionals to ensure that the information we provide is reliable and evidence-based.
Our volunteers have first-hand knowledge of thyroid disease, enabling them to help you, whether by phone or at meetings. The British Thyroid Foundation is for anyone who wants to know the facts about thyroid disease. Whatever your type of thyroid disorder we will provide you with information and support.

I was born with congenital hypothyroidism in the mid 70's, when it wasn't so wildly known/discussed as it is now. What this video doesn't explain is that Levothyroxine (the generic of name brand Synthroid) can also cause weight gain, whereas Synthroid can control it a bit. The misfortune of living in the states is that health insurance is now a requirement, and a majority, if not all, of the health insurance companies, will try to push Levothyroxine (generic) over Synthroid (name brand), offering the former up for free, whereas one would have to pay a lofty price for the latter. Just an FYI.
Different brands of tablets can be a concern in the UK too. You can see the results of a levothyroxine tablet survey that we hosted at btf-thyroid.org/professionals/research-news/274-levothyroxine-tablet-survey-summary
Alright, well now that brings up a very interesting point, that I would love and appreciate some insight on. My grandparents were English, my grandfather worked for British Airways, so we travelled quite a bit. What I was born with was considered by an American doctor (in Alaska) to be congenital. My biological mother doesn't have any kind of thyroid condition, but I have no idea about my father. My question is; could this potentially have been something I inherited, or was drug use by a biological parent at play (they both explored with recreational drugs), or is this something that was isolated? Also, can a thyroid gland explode, or never develop in the first place? I should mention that I'm currently in New York City, and wide awake at 3:35 in the morning.

You mention tests for TSH and T4 but what about T3. Is that because prescribing T3 medication is expensive and so it's ignored?
You can find more information about the drugs used to treat hypothyroidism in our guide at btf-thyroid.org/information/leaflets/29-hypothyroidism-guide
This was so cute! I'm studying for my peds quiz and this has been so helpful thank you!
I am 12 and have a thyroid problem and have almost al of the symptoms of the blue kid plus i am a bit overweight so this was really helpfull and informative
Leon Marušić I'm ten and I have hypothyroidism and my growth has been stunted due to it I as well take lethothyloxine and twice a year I have to go in to get my blood tested I was diagnosed from dr Greg chambone but it's not a super big deal when you know it's been taken care of
Just out of curiosity, did this "lump" feel sensitive at all? Any pain? Can it cause breathing issues? I have an adam's apple now when I never had one before. Every now and then it feels like i'm being pinched there. I've had a weird experience with symptoms and have tracked it down to my thyroid. My doctors keep thinking its anxiety and panic attacks( I've been to the ER 5 times due to rapid uncontrollable heart rate and bp, breathing troubles, and weakness). They kept telling me its a panic attack when I KNOW what a panic attack is and panic attacks don't come out of knowhere right after you wake up or when you are laughing having a good time. What should I do??? No one is even bothering to do the proper blood tests and keep saying its psychological!
+ftffighter You can find more information about thyroid-related symptoms on our website at www.btf-thyroid.org In particular, the leaflets about nodules and swellings and thyroid cancer may be of help to you. However, this is something you should discuss further with your GP as there are tests that he or she can do for thyroid problems.
Thank you for the info! I don't dare want to jump to conclusions at all but it is horrible that it has gotten this bad before a doctor will do anything. It has taken me to switch doctors 3 times before I found someone who will actually be serious about it and not just walk in and out due to being diagnosed with anxiety in the past...
Thank you for your video i hope my treatment goes as well as yours.
very informative. ..... thank you. .. there isn't alot out there for congenital hypothyroidism.
sir i want help plzzz indian girl problem THYROID IN EYE
I was in remission for a solid 2 years from a severe case of Graves' disease. Just relapsed a week ago. Cause: stress
How's it going now? These days. Any medicine?
I wish I could have this as well. I've had eyelid surgeries, but can't use steroids (kidney disease and more...). My TED is flaring up again with eye pain and headache and I'm needing treatment. Unfortunately my health insurance (in the US) fights having to pay for anything sophisticated or unusual (or expensive)!
So I am a bit confused regarding this video. Did Beth only have the one side of the thyroid removed? Or did she proceed with a complete thyroidectomy after diagnosed with cancer on the one side?
i have TED i have a Chinita eye before but since ive got hyperthyroidism my eyes got affected with graves disease and my vision is very blurred im also blind without eyeglasses on. im planning to have Orbital Decompression hope that will help.
awesome!
I would love to have this treatment for my TED but I don't think it is on offer here in Ireland where I am.
Mine did not descend all the way so u can see mine :(
Thank you for the informative video, my daughter was born without a thyroid and now she is six and perfect and think this is a good video for her to watch.
